5.2.1.1 Governing Equations

For plasma discharge, NPDBD in air is described using the coupled continuity equation for each species and reaction, the drift-diffusion equation deduced from the momentum balance equation, the electron energy conservation equation, and Poisson’s equation for electric potential:

where n j denotes the number density of ion, electron, and neutral species; Γ j is the drift-diffusion approximation term; R j,l is the local creation/loss rate due to chemical reactions (detailed air chemistry is presented in [10]); ε denotes the electron energy; −Γ e  · E is the energy transferred to electrons through Joule heating; and Q e−n is energy loss of electrons due to elastic and inelastic collisions.

For fluid response, Navier–Stokes equations with a heating source term are adopted:
